DVD Authoring And Production

DVDs are distinctly different from every video form that preceded them. Understanding what DVD authoring and production means will help you get the most out of your projects. Basically, film, broadcast television and tape all have a specific program that is presented in a specific order with a single soundtrack. There are a few mild exceptions to this, for example you can fast forward or rewind video tapes and certain broadcasts may have the option of closed captioning or a Spanish soundtrack, but in general you have very little control over the video. This is not the case with a DVD.

DVD authoring services, such as high definition DVD authoring, can be summed up by examining the DVD menu and the remote control. First of all, a menu is entirely new with this type of technology. Any option included in the menu, as well as the visual display and any audio included in the menu itself, needs to be designed and programmed. This is authoring in its broadest form. The menu itself and any chapters built into the main work are most common forms of authoring. Anything that can be included in the menu, such as special features or previews that are not part of the main body of video, or slideshows, DVD-Rom content and games are built during the authoring process. Turning to the remote, the function of buttons unique to DVD also fall under the umbrella of authoring. The soundtrack button allows you to switch between any soundtracks included and the subtitle button allows a choice between any available subtitling. Proper DVD authoring and production planning can result in several different soundtracks and subtitles, typically in various languages. A final feature unique to the DVD is the angle button. If authored to utilize this feature, the angle button allows you to switch from one camera view to another! Proper authoring not only makes your video more attractive but also a truly interactive product.
